Where These Numbers Come From
The step ranges come from a 2022 meta-analysis of 15 international studies published in The Lancet Public Health and funded by the CDC. It found that taking more steps a day was linked with a steadily lower risk of death from any cause, up to a point: about 6,000 to 8,000 steps for adults 60 and older, and about 8,000 to 10,000 steps for adults younger than 60.
The weekly activity guidelines come from the CDC and the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. The week-by-week plan uses a common, gradual approach of adding about 1,000 steps a day each week; it is a practical suggestion, not an official CDC rule.

Daily Steps FAQ
How many steps a day should I aim for?
Large research studies suggest that for adults under 60, the health benefits of daily steps level off around 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day, and for adults 60 and older, around 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day. Any increase from where you are now can help.
Is 10,000 steps a day necessary?
No. A 2022 meta-analysis of 15 studies found the benefits level off below 10,000 steps for most people, especially adults 60 and older.
What does the CDC recommend?
The CDC recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity, such as brisk walking, each week, plus muscle-strengthening activity on at least 2 days. Adults 65 and older should also include balance activities. Children and teens 6 to 17 need 60 minutes or more of activity every day.
Why does the calculator not ask for my weight?
Step research is based on age, not body weight. Your goal range is the same regardless of weight, so we keep the calculator simple and private.
